From his comic book debut to his appearances on the silver screen, Spider-Man has constantly been in the public spotlight for over forty years. Now take a look back at some of the highlights
in his career which helped develop his status
as a pop culture icon!

August 1962- the very first appearance of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15

March 1963- Spider-Man's very own comic series debuts, titled The Amazing Spider-Man.

September 1967- Spider-Man's animated TV series debuts and runs until 1970, producing 52 episodes. It's most notable for its famous theme tune, which has since become iconic.

December 1976- A second ongoing Spidey series is created called The Spectacular Spider-Man.

June 1991- The Wall Street Journal famously announces, "Spider-Man is coming to Wall Street", when Marvel becomes listed on the stock exchange.

October 2000- The origin of Peter Parker's powers was retooled in the new series Ultimate Spider-Man with updated storylines to reflect today's pop culture (celebrities occasionally feature).

May 2002- Spider-Man comes to the big screen with Sam Raimi's blockbuster film. Featuring Spidey played by Tobey Maguire battling the Green Goblin, it broke records at the box office, earning US$114.8 million in its opening weekend.

July 2004- Spider-Man 2 is released, featuring a new villain (Doctor Octopus), and surpassing the original films box office earnings.

April 2007- It is announced that Julie Taymor will direct a Spider-Man musical with U2's Bono and The Edge composing.

May 2007- The final part of the Spider-Man trilogy is released. This time Spider-Man must face a trio of villains- Harry Osborn (as the New Goblin), Sandman and Venom! As with the other films in the series, this one also broke box office records.

October 2007- Spider-Man: The Icon is released worldwide.
